The Portage District Library makes every effort to be a place where you can come to access technology.
We are a wireless hotspot. You need a library card or guest pass to access the internet on your laptop or other mobile device.
Internet stations on the upper level are not filtered. In Michigan, state law prohibits library users from accessing pornographic sites where minors are present. You can find more information about our internet access policy here.
Internet stations in the children’s and teen rooms are filtered. Anyone under the age of 18 must have a permission slip signed by a legal guardian to access the internet at the library.
You can use your library card number to access the Internet and software on our computers. If you do not have a library card, you can get a guest pass at the Checkout desk. Computer time is limited to two hours per day. Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Office 2007: Excel, Power Point, and Word are loaded on each public computer. Certain file types may not be downloaded on desktop PCs.
|A bank of computers that can be used for an unlimited amount of time to browse magazine and newspaper databases.||One computer for job searchers. Ask at the information desk to be logged on to the job search computer.||Computers with educational games for preschool and elementary users are available in the preschool and juvenile rooms.|
If you are a registered borrower, you may check out a Laptop from the information desk for use within the library. These laptops check out for two hours, and may be renewed if nobody is waiting to use one. You may download any type of file on a circulating laptop, but some types of interactive sites may be blocked.
You may print from stationary computer stations. You may send print jobs to our printer via your computer or mobile device during library hours. Printing is in black and white (10 cents a page) or color (75 cents a page).
We have a copy machine and a Library Document Station on the upper level behind the adult information desk. Copies are black and white and are 10 cents per page.
We have a FAX service available for public use on the upper level behind the adult information desk at the Library Document Station. Rates are $1.00 for each page. It does not accept credit cards.
Aside from being able to scan documents and images to copy or FAX, our Library Document Station will also scan to email, USB device, GoogleDrive, OneDrive, Dropbox, and your mobile device via QR code. These non-print options are free to use.
We circulate flash drives from the adult information desk, in case you need to download large files to travel.
We circulate Playaways, listening devices that hold one recording of an audio book each. You can checkout an adapter that allow you to use the Playaway devices with your car’s radio. The adapters are available at the adult information desk.
