On May 1, 2013, Christy Klien becomes Portage District Library’s new Director! Below is the press release.
Hiring of Portage District Library Director
On April 22, 2013, the Portage District Library Board met in a regular session and concluded their internal search process by taking official action and offering Interim Library Director Christine Klien the position of permanent Library Director of the Portage District Library, effective May 1, 2013 – which she has accepted.
This action followed an internal search process that generated one candidate who was interviewed in a special public board meeting held in open session at the Portage District Library on April 17, 2013. The Library Board set specific requirements for the Library Director position which the candidate fulfilled.
The hiring of Christine Klien as Library Director, culminates a professional library career for Klien at the Portage District Library which has spanned 17 years. It has included service as a children’s librarian, Head of Youth Services, and more recently over the last four months, as Interim Library Director. Klien will direct a staff of approximately 45 regular, part-time and hourly employees, and 60 to 70 active volunteers.
Library Board Chair Betty Lee Ongley stated that: “Christine Klien has fulfilled our requirements for education, skills and experience for the Library Director position. She has exceeded our expectations in terms of her ability to lead by example and garner the goodwill of the community, which she has done very well during her tenure at PDL. There were many expressions of support for Ms. Klien from former board members, community leaders and library staff, so we are confident that she will evolve successfully in her role as Director of the Portage District Library.”
